What is CURE Childhood
Cancer?
CURE Childhood Cancer, founded in 1975, is a non-profit organization dedicated to conquering childhood cancer through research, education and patient and family support. CURE's financial resources are used to support basic and clinical pediatric oncology research, as well as to provide a broad range of support programs, resources and services for the entire family coping with childhood cancer, from diagnosis and beyond.
How Glavine Got Involved:
Tom Glavine's connection to childhood cancer began in January 2003 when the Hennessey family - a friend of the Glavines - discovered their son Will had Ewings Sarcoma, a type of bone cancer. (Will is currently in remission.) Through the Glavines relationship with the Hennessys, they came to know Kristin and Mike Connor, whose son, Brandon was born with a tumor (neuroblastoma) near his spine--a tumor that completely disappeared before he was set to have surgery to remove it in November (2003).
Kristin Connor enlisted Glavine's help with CureSearch, the childhood cancer organization she was involved with at the time. When Kristin moved on to become the Executive Director of CURE, the Glavine family become involved as well, with both Tom and his wife, Chris, serving on CURE's Advisory Board of Directors.
At the Mets Foundation "Teammates in the Community" fundraiser on June 22, 2007, Mets players and guests helped to raise more than $500,000 for a variety of organizations, selected by participating players and ownership. At the live auction for the event, which raised over $277,000, Mets players auctioned off unique fan experiences, including a round of golf with Glavine. The Mets Foundation will distribute the proceeds from the event to the selected organizations, with one of the recipients being CURE.
