"As the principal of Our Lady of Mercy
High School I would like to recognize and thank Tom Glavine for his appearance
at Mercy on July 22. We held an Open House for the south side community and
entertained a large crowd. Tom agreed to appear and sign autographs for his many
fans in attendance. As one can imagine, Tom was inundated with requests for
pictures and autographs. Both he and his wife were exceptionally patient and
gracious, and made the experience enjoyable for all. As an educator I greatly
appreciate the example Tom sets for young people both on and off the field. He
is a credit to the Braves and the Catholic community of Atlanta, and we at Our
Lady of Mercy wish him and his family all the best!

Cobis, Principal Our Lady of Mercy Catholic High School, Fairburn
"I started that game, and it was my
first All-Star appearance and it was pretty exciting. I just remember the
excitement of the whole thing. Getting to Toronto, going to the press
conference, and being announced as the starting pitcher...all the excitement of
the workouts and the Home Run Derby. Having my family there. We were in the
middle of the worst-to-first year. At that point in time, we had a good first
half but had a bad last week, and we were nine games out. But right after the
All-Star break, we took off. I was somewhat in awe, but trying not to be."
--Glavine's favorite All-Star memory, from the 1991 game
in Toronto. (printed in the July 2000 ChopTalk).
"It's an honor, especially the way my
career started the couple of years I had in the '80s! It's great to be in teh
situation to pitch as long as I have, to be a part of a team of ANY decade. As a
young player, you don't envision great things happening. You hope to survive
long enough to get some years in. I knew I had some talent, but I didn't know
I'd have the opportunities I've had. The great thing about (being named with
these guys) is that we could go down as the best pitching staff in the history
of our organization. We're carving out our place in history. That doesn't happen
often from a player's standpoint."
--Glavine's views on being named to the ChopTalk Team of
the 90s.
"He's like a tailor; a little off here,
a little off there & you're done,take a seat!"
--Vin Scully commenting on Glavine after busting batters
inside for the final strike.
