More Jogging

September 2nd, 2010

My second time out running with the Nike+ I think I went 3.23 or 3.24 miles in the 30 minutes.

My third time out (today) I went about 3.25 or 3.26. (My sportband said 3.26 but when I loaded it to the Nike+ site it listed it as 3.25) So I’m increasing my distance each time. If I remember correctly, the pace on my first mile today was 8.14 and on the second was 8.40-something. I got slower on my third one (in the 9 minute range) but managed to increase my speed back to an 8-something pace for the last .25-.26 that I ran.

Not bad. I know that my times are painfully slow to runners but as a beginner who hasn’t done this before and who isn’t in the world’s best shape, I’m pretty content with it. I mean, I’m not planning to compete in any races or anything like that. Just running to run and hopefully get in decent shape.

I think I’m going to try to go out tomorrow and just run a mile again since it’s technically my “off” day.

That may or may not happen though, since my ears feel clogged today and I feel kind of like a bout of vertigo is coming on. I’ve bent over a couple of times and raised up and had that whole “room spining” feeling. So I’ll see how I feel tomorrow morning. Probably wouldn’t be wise to run if that is going on. I’d rather not crack my head open on the sidewalk….

Running Update

August 29th, 2010

Workout Update
I’ve continued to run 30 minutes every other day. I recently purchased a new pair of running shoes (Nike) and also bought the Nike+ sportband so I could track my distance, pace, calories burned, etc. I used it for the first time yesterday and really liked it. Yesterday was the first time I really got an idea of how far I was running. My old running shoes were okay but I definitely feel a difference between the two.

Yesterday I ran approx. 3.22 miles in 30 minutes. I think that translates to 5.18 K? Something like that, which I guess works out to be about 9.2 min. per mile pace. I think that’s what it was. Well, I won’t win any races EVER, but I never thought I would.  I’m not delusional. And hey, running 3 miles every other day isn’t too shabby for a person who wasn’t running at all before June of this year.

The weather has been slightly cooler in the morning — 70s this week as opposed to upper 80s (It’s still hot has heck during the day though – 100s). Oh gosh, I forgot how good 70s feel. It motivated me to lace up the running shoes again this morning. I decided to just run a “quick” mile and see how I did with that.  I did the mile in about 8:16 min. Again, won’t win any races, but not bad, I don’t think, considering I’ve only been doing it for a few months.

I figure I will continue to do the 30 minute runs every other day and maybe on a few of the days in between, I’ll run a mile … kind of switch things up a bit and get a little extra exercise in. I’ll try to leave at least one day per week as a rest day. Maybe if I do this, I can improve on my times a little bit.

I figure that’s the important thing — continue to enjoy it and see if I can improve on my personal results. The thing I don’t need to do is what I did yesterday — read running web sites to see what other people’s times are when they do 5K and miles and whatnot. Because if you do that, you realize you are a REALLY slow runner and you don’t feel as good about your runs as you did when you first finished them. lol. But, hey. I’m NEVER going be a speed demon or anything, so I should just be happy with the fact that I’m out there doing it.

I’ll try to do that. I really am enjoying it. I never thought that’d be the case.

Seizure #2

August 27th, 2010

Ratchet had another seizure yesterday.

I was so hoping the first seizure was just a fluke thing and he’d never have another one. Or, in the very least, he wouldn’t have another one for a long, long time. But, not the case.

The first seizure occured on July 22 at noon.
This seizure occured on August 26 at 2:20 p.m.

The first seizure was on a day that was in the 90s, cloudy/overcast, humid and it rained later in the afternoon (after the seizure)
Yesterday’s seizure weather was in the 90s, cloudy, 40% humidity and it rained earlier in the day (before the seizure)

So definitely similiar weather. And similar times of the day.

The seizures themselves were very similar as well. They both started with him sleeping in one of the dog beds in the living room and then waking up, agitated. With yesterday’s, he sat up in the bed and started growling at something. I thought he heard a noise. But then he stood up and you could see the obvious unsteadiness, the stumbling and then I knew what was coming.

He stumbled into our TV stand and then stumbled into our Rock Band drum set and before I could steer him away he fell under it and began seizing. Not the best place for a seizure – I was afraid he would bump his head or tangle up in the wires. He had full body convulsions, foaming at the mouth, urinated. I just sat with him and rubbed his back and calmly said, “It’s okay Ratchet, it’s okay.”

When he stopped seizing (I didn’t think to time it. sigh. But it felt about 1 minute) he laid there motionless for another minute or so. Then it wa like he “woke up” and was very excited — circling the room, jumping on the couches, jumping on me. All the same stuff he did last time. It only lasted a few minutes and then he was back to normal.

It really is frustrating not knowing what is causing it.

We switched him to grain-free food when he had his first seizure, because our vet mentioned some people seeing some progress after that. (And I’ve read the same on the ‘net). At first we put him on Wellness Core. Wellness is a great food but I’m thinking Ratchet’s got a poultry or potato allergy. He seemed itchier than normal and his ears got very gunky and he scratched a place on the outside and inside of his ear. Now, he’s always been itchy (no idea what his allergies are) and his ears have always been a problem, but he hasn’t scratched a place inside his ear since way back when he was eating Natural Balance potato and duck. Which was also the last time he had very gunky/dirty ears like this. So….is it poultry – NB had duck, Core had turkey/chicken – or is it potato? Not sure, but I’m avoiding both.

I switched him to Nature’s Variety Instinct which is grain-free and potato free. Initially I planned to put him on their salmon formula (which has salmon and other fish) but the day we went to buy it, the store had gotten an email saying that a certain batch was not dehydrated long enough, so there was excess moisture and people were complaining of mold. SO…that took off every last salmon bag off the shelf. So, I chose the Rabbit formula instead. Which, technically has chicken fat in it, but according to their web site, most dogs are allergic to the protein itself and not the fat, so it should be okay. We’ll see if that’s actually the case.

His ears do look a lot better at least. They aren’t dirty anymore.

But then someone told me (and I’ve read on the ‘net) that rosemary in food can be a trigger for seizures. What is in his current food? Rosemary Extract. ARRRRRGGGHHHH. I don’t know if that could have triggered this seizure or not. It’s very far down on the list of ingredients, very close to the bottom. And, while rosemary extract is in this current food, it was NOT in the Wellness Simple food he was eating when he had his first seizure. Grain was in the first food, but no rosemary.

So did grain trigger the first one and rosemary the second? Somehow I don’t think it’s that easy…..

At least there was a month between the two seizures. Our vet told us if they started occuring more than once a month we would need to put him on medication. But I think if he continues to have one a month we might eventually have to put him on something anyway. That feels like a lot of seizures per year for me. BUT, it’s certainly better than one a week or several a day or something like that, which some dogs experience.

But I sure hope their is a bigger gap between the second and third seizure. But I’ll take a once a month seizure over one that happens sooner. I definitely don’t want that…..

And you know the scary thing? Who is to say this IS the second seizure. What if he had some while we were out of the house? How would we know? I mean, I work from home so most of the time I am here. But what about when I go jump in the shower? What about when I go with Louie to the grocery store or the pet store? We are never gone long at all, but all it would take is about 5 minutes. And we’d never know. I mean, he pees when he has them but, if he pees in the carpet that would dry up and we wouldn’t notice. Same with the saliva he slings everywhere. Unless he had the seizure on the kitchen floor tile and we saw a puddle, I don’t think we’d know. That is worrisome.

My husband might get his wish about setting up a camera and using some of these iphone apps that let you monitor stuff….

Awesome

August 7th, 2010

Had to sit through a rain delay, but once it started, Tom Glavine’s number retirement ceremony was awesome. I can’t really put it into words, but I just sat there with a big grin and my eyes were misty.

Man, he had some career. I had a blast watching it all and then reliving it as I searched for photos and made screen caps and all of that stuff for my web site

Incredibly special night.

And seriously, how freakin’ cute is his little boy? The little tie kills me.

Congratulations, Tom

August 6th, 2010

So Tom Glavine was inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame at a luncheon today. And later this evening, he will have his number retired in a ceremony before the Braves-Giants game. CONGRATULATIONS, Tom!

Tom Glavine is hands down my most favorite athlete ever. He was a phenomenal pitcher and player and is an all-around good guy, too. He is highly deserving of the induction and number retirement. I wish I could have been there in person, but I’m happy I at least get to witness it through articles, photos, tweets and a TV broadcast.  The Braves did an excellent job today – first tweeting a couple of photos of the set up of the event, and then later tweeting a personal video message from Tom to the twitter fans and then also posting some footage of him doing interviews. Loved it!

30 minutes

August 2nd, 2010

Did Day 1 and Day 2 of Week 9 of the C25K program today and Friday. Had to run 30 minutes. It went great, blah, blah, blah, no one reads this blog and no one cares, blah, blah, blah.

One more day and then I complete the program. After that, I’ll just continue to run 30 minutes and eventually maybe try to run that 45 minute one.

28 Minutes, Ratchet scare and Kitten Love

July 27th, 2010

Today was Week 8 Day 2 of the Couch to 5K workout I’m doing. I had to run for 28 minutes. I really had to push to get through the last five minutes. Made it though. I really want to buy some new shoes. I want some Nike plus ones and also a Nike plus sportband so I can track distance and whatnot. But, I don’t have any money for them right now so…make do with what I got.

Ratchet gave us a big scare on Thursday. He had a seizure. Hubby was at work and I was lying on the couch while Ratchet slept in his dog bed in front of me. He got up and started barking. I thought he had heard a noise until I looked at him and realized he was disoriented. He was barking at the ceiling and he ran into our TV stand and our coffee table. It was like he was unsteady. And when I went over to him he didn’t really seem to register that I was there. Then he fell on the floor and had a full body seizure. His whole body convulsed, he foamed at the mouth, made a whiny/grunty noise and peed. It was horrible and scary and I was in such a panic. I just rubbed his back and said “please be okay” while I called my husband. It probably only lasted 30 seconds or so but it felt like forever. After, he kind of sat up for a minute or so just staring and drooling and then he got up and seemed pretty okay. He was a little different — pacing the house and jumping up on me several times, but after a few more minutes he was back to his old self.

We took him to the vet and our amazing doc (Dr. K) said everything looked good with him – eyes, heart, acting normally, etc., etc. He did bloodwork and we got the full results today – all completely normal – so he thinks it’s just epilepsy. He said if it was an older dog you would worry about a tumor, but when they are as young as Ratchet it’s usually just epilepsy. He didn’t recommend any medication unless he starts having cluster seizures (multiple seizures in the same day) or if he started having them more than once a month. For now, we just proceed as normal and write down whenever he has one for our records.

He hasn’t had another one (knock on wood) and I hope he never does. I’m in the process of switching his food over to a grain-free one, since Dr. K mentioned some people theorize that grain-free diets help with seizures. Hopefully he’s not allergic to any ingredients in the new food. :) If so we’ll move to another one.

BTW, Dr. K is so wonderful. He’s been Ratchet’s doc since birth and Ratchet loves him. He is SO calm around him and if you ever met Ratchet you would realize why that is so amazing. lol. He’s an excitable little fella. And I really appreciated the fact that when the blood work results came in, Dr. K himself called us to let us know. He could have easily gotten one of the vet tech’s or front desk people to call and say “hey, results are normal” but he called himself. I like that.

The kittens? No longer stay in their spare bedroom and instead roam about the house. Dr. Nefarious and Ratchet are buddies I think.

See? The sweetness almost kills me….

25 Minutes

July 16th, 2010

Yep, today’s C25K workout consisted of me running for 25 minutes without stopping. I did it and it wasn’t so bad. I do think it would have been better if it wasn’t in the 90s at 6 a.m. but…that’s Arizona for you.

I actually think the running 20+ minutes workouts are easier than the ones where you have to run for 8 or 10 minutes, then walk, then run again. Because my workout before this one was  run 10 minutes, walk 3 minutes, run 10 minutes and I felt like I was dying. Odd. Maybe the starting and stopping is just harder.

From here on out it is straight running. I have three more times I have to run for 25 minutes, then 3 workouts of running 28 minutes, then 3 of 30 minutes. After that, the program is done and I can just continue to run for 30 minutes or try out the 45 minute run.

Not sure about that last one. Heheh.

I Did It!

July 10th, 2010

I ran 20 minutes today without stopping! That might not sound like a big deal to some people but seriously, it was a big deal for me.

The first part of the run was the hardest. I ran, and ran, and ran and thought surely it had been at least 10 minutes but it was only 8. But, once I hit the 10 minute mark, it was a lot easier after that. And by the 5 minute mark I was running with a big smile on my face.

Wasn’t running very fast, but I felt like I kept the same steady pace throughout. I was happy with myself.

On to Week 6 in the C25K program!

In kitten news, we’ve allowed the dogs to visit with them for a few minutes periodically. Clank is absolutely fine around them. Ratchet is doing a lot better. I mean, Ratchet was always fine with them but he was just a little too excited. But he’s been a bit calmer. They’re good boys.

Meet Dr. Nefarious and Zoni

July 8th, 2010

So uhm, we kind of have two kittens now.

See?

The one on the left is Dr. Nefarious and the one on the right is Zoni. (Yes, these are also names from the Ratchet & Clank video game)

Tuesday morning, after my husband left for work, Clank stood up against our sliding glass door and started scratching at it. He never does this. So, I let him in the backyard. Immediately he and Ratchet ran out there and started barking at something on the top of our back wall. That something? A stray momma cat and her three kittens.

Well, once I got the dogs inside and went back out, the momma cat left. About an hour later, one of the kittens climbed down and left. An hour after that, I walked around behind our house to see if maybe the momma and the other kitten were just down below on the other side of the wall. Didn’t see them. An hour after that, I completely caved and went out and brought the two kittens that were left inside.

I couldn’t help it. I felt like I waited long enough for the mom to come back and it was HOT outside. And what if the momma cat didn’t come back and they were stranded and had no food and …and dammit, they’re adorable, okay?

Anyway…they are currently in our hallway. We bought kitten food, bowls, litter box,  put a stuffed animal in there and a couple of boxes for them to play with. And, we are s-l-o-w-l-y introducing them to the dogs. Clank doesn’t seem to care one way or another. Ratchet whines a lot (I think he wants to play with them) and when we let him sniff one today while I was holding it, he licked it. So, he seems like he’ll be okay with them too.

Are we keeping them? Well, we let people know if they want them to let us know, but haven’t heard anything. I’m kind of hoping it stays that way. LOL.

In other news, I did Week 5, Day 2 of the C25K program this morning. That’s the run 8 minutes, walk 5 minutes, run 8 minutes one. I did it with no problems. I got the big 20 minute run coming up on Saturday. Eeek. I’m going to do all I can to continue running, even if it I have to run really, really, slow. Of course, I already run slow.
